About Ayurveda Psychiatry

The whole world is concerned about mental health at the present scenario. WHO has officially declared that depression will be the second most leading cause of disability on the basis of a survey conducted by DALY. By understanding the extent of social impact that can be caused by an alarming raise in psychiatric disorders worldwide, depression is selected as the theme of year 2017, World Health Day. As per the meta-analysis of the conducted studies regarding the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in an Indian scenario, it is concluded that nearly 20% of adult population is suffering with one or the other form of psychiatric disorders which requires an intervention from mental health professionals. As per a study conducted in Kerala the prevalence of psychiatric disorders is 12.8%.

Ayurveda, the leading traditional system of Indian medicine is having a speciality named Manovigyan avum Manasroga (AYURVEDA PSYCHIATRY) which exclusively deal with psychiatric disorders. The efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines in the management of various psychiatric disorders are proven by a number of studies and projects conducted by academic institutions. Geriatric psychiatry, child psychiatry, substance use disorders are some of the areas where the possibilities of Ayurveda psychiatry can be explored in depth.

A healthy mind is an asset

Need of establishing Ayurveda psychiatry

Ayurveda considers complete health to be the perfect balance of mind, body, and soul. In disorders such as depression, anxiety, and OCD, Ayurveda produces significant results as a complementary treatment method to allopathy. Lot of misconceptions are prevailing among the society even among educated community regarding various psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and they are getting ill-treated and exploited by the quacks and professionally un competent physicians. A physician who is not specialized in psychiatry fails to diagnose the case and give timely intervention. This can worsen the condition of the patient. Early diagnosed cases which are not on modern medications can be completely cured by Ayurvedic management. The side effects caused due to the use of modern psychiatric medications can be well controlled by Ayurvedic management and thereby can improve the quality of life of the patient. This is observed from the conducted studies.

Integrated treatment approaches by complimenting Ayurvedic medicines along with modern medicines in minimum doses are found to be more beneficial to the patients. The progression of disease like dementia can be arrested by Ayurvedic management where modern management strategies often fail. The treatment protocol for various substance use disorders is found to be very much effective in the management of withdrawal and dependence syndromes. Learning disabilities and behavioural problems among the children alarming now a day. This can be well addressed without hindering their social and psychological development. These strongly suggests the need of the society for an alternate system of medicine for the better cure and quality of life of psychiatric patients.
